6 Favorite Ways to Use Hydrosol

What is Hydrosol?

Hydrosols or hydrolates are the condensate water produced during distillation of plant material for aroma therapeutic purposes. Hydrosol contain all of the plant in every drop, it is gentlest and safest aromatics use in caring for your skin.

What is Not Hydrosol?

Water with fragrance oil or essential oils added is not hydrosol. For example, Rose water that contains water, Rosa Dascena extract, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate and citric acid is not hydrosol. Pure distilled water and essential oil of Neroli also is not hydrosol as well. Therefore, double check the content with your supplier before purchasing it.

Storage and Handling

  1. Always refrigerate your hydrosols especially in Malaysia, due to the weather is humid and hot.
  2. Check your hydrosols whether your supplier have added any preservative or alcohol in it and store it according to the suggested due date.
  3. I prefer to keep another small spray bottle for the hydrosol that I always used to avoid overly exposure to oxygen.

My Favorite Ways of Using Hydrosol

1. As Facial Toner

Hydrosol is a lovely product for facial toner, I like to mix and match it to suite my face condition. Different type of hydrosols has differences therapeutic effects on it. If you are new to hydrosols, you can simply start with the following hydrosols:

Common Name Latin Name Properties
Rose Rose damascena Suitable for normal to dry, mature and sensitive skin.
Lavender Lavandula angustifolia Suitable for all skin types.
German Chamomile Matricaria recutita Good for sensitive, inflamed and problem skin.
Neroli Citrus aurantium Suitable for sensitive and oily skin.

2. As Body Mist

Read your label like what your fragrance mist or perfume make from? It is mainly artificial fragrance or synthetic created scents. Some of us are sensitive toward this scent. Recently I received a Christmas gift exchange of a fragrance mist.

The ingredients listed as Alcohol Denat, Water, Fragrance, Benzophenone-3… by reading the label, I will choose to use the natural hydrosol as my body mist.

3. Add in Mask and Cosmetic DIY

Mix and match your mask and raw material in cosmetic DIY with hydrosols. It has therapeutic effects rather than just putting distilled water or water in your skin care preparation. I am sure you will love it!

4. For Inflamed and Redness Skin Reliefs

In hot day, you can bring a spray bottle with hydrosol to relief your skin inflamed. In air-condition room, when you feel your skin is dehydrated, you can also spray hydrosol on your face to get moisture.

5. Compress for Tired and Puffy Eye

I like to use cornflower and rose hydrosol to compress my eyes when over expouse to computer. It helps to release the discomfort and I also noticed that it reduces the eye wrinkle as well.

I like the sweet smelling and cooling effect of the cornflower hydrosol. It is used reputable as eye wash and treatment for eye ailments (But I do not recommend you to use it for eyewash as you might not aware the hydrosol is contaminated).

6. Room or Linen Spray

When I travel and the hotel room has smell, I will either use essential oils with water spray or hydrosol to spray the room or at the bed linen (whatever I can get from in my luggage).

I love to hear from you too, please share with me your favorite ways of using hydrosols in the comments session!
